Lead by Example
I remember this game I played growing up. It was a computer game where the goal was to get the little characters from the "starting" location to "goal" location. The game was called Lemmings. The lemmings would simply walk in the same direction no matter the outcome. It was my responsibility to solve the puzzle and save as many as possible. The thing I remember thinking as a kid was how funny it was that the lemmings would keep walking no matter the outcome. In a nostalgic way it highlights the importance of leading by example (creating a clear path to the goal).
Good leaders create a clear path to the goal.
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. One clear component of leadership is action. To act. To initiate movement or direction from out front. The other clear component is a distinct relationship with another person, group, or organization. Leaders must acknowledge and realize their action has impact on others. Good leaders create a path for others, great leaders allow their lives to be a living example as they walk the path too.

Modeling the character, qualities and embodying the aspirations of the organization create compelling leadership. The more aligned we are with what we say and how we live, the more freedom we will experience in our leadership. If you are currently leading (spoiler alert: we are all leading in some capacity or all have the potential to be leading soon), I would encourage you to lead by example. Leading by example increases authenticity, consistency, integrity and alignment.

While the shift might be subtle, the implications will be significant. Instead of leading from the position of "Do what I say.", embrace the approach of "Follow me." Invite those whom you oversee to follow you. Pursue a life formation that is contagious and appealing to others. Develop a passion for people that is modeled in your heart, your mind, your life. As you lead by example, you will lead with authenticity. Respect will increase and everyone will benefit from your courageous leadership.
